School Resource Officers

My name is Sergeant Jesse Burris and I supervise the SRO’s (School Resource Officer) at the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. Currently we have 2 full time SRO’s. One is stationed, full time, at Coal Ridge High School. The other SRO is stationed at Grand Valley High School but also spends time in several of the other schools in the Parachute/ Battlement Mesa area.

The SRO program is a unique assignment that the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office provides to the community. The SRO’s that are picked for this assignment work countless hours in the school as well as in the community. The SRO program is a safety based program that focuses on building healthy relationships with students as well as school staff.

The SRO’s are provided the opportunity to help coach many of the different sports throughout the school year. They also assist in the many different types of clubs that the school provides to the students.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office SRO team also spends a significant amount of time teaching within their respective schools. Many of the topics include Government, Drug Awareness, Biology and Math. This provides the SRO’s an opportunity to continue to build on relationships and to show students that Law Enforcement is there to help them.

I firmly believe that the SRO program is one of the best programs that Law Enforcement can provide to our communities. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office SRO’s have a direct impact on the lives of young adults and can help mold and guide them as they progress through school. Good SRO’s have a direct impact on the culture within our community and help build trust and confidence.

If teaching, coaching and mentoring is something you are interested in, then I encourage you to apply at the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.
